Mercedes-Benz Integrates ChatGPT into Vehicles for Enhanced AI-Driven Voice Commands
Mercedes-Benz, the esteemed German automaker, has declared its plan to incorporate OpenAI’s ChatGPT chatbot into its vehicles as a part of its Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) feature. This move aims to augment in-car functionalities with AI-driven voice commands.
Scheduled to start on Friday, June 16, this beta program will run for three months, exclusively available to the U.S. market. To participate, drivers simply need to inquire about the program with their car.
Mercedes-Benz will utilize the Microsoft Azure OpenAI Service, launched in March, to introduce ChatGPT to its cars. While the MBUX voice assistant and its “Hey Mercedes” feature have been part of Mercedes-Benz A-Class since 2018, the integration of ChatGPT signifies a new stride in the brand’s commitment to innovation.
Speaking with the car directly will facilitate the execution of voice commands. According to a sales representative at Mercedes-Benz of Carlsbad, California, drivers can leverage this feature to adjust the car’s temperature, play music, or set up navigation. However, these commands will function only within the confines of the car.
Isabel Meurer, Communications Manager for Mercedes-Benz’s Operating System (MB.OS), connected car, and digital products, noted that among the current large language models, ChatGPT is the most advanced. She explained that the company sees considerable potential in generative AI and large language models, particularly in processing and generating natural language.
The primary goal for Mercedes-Benz is to enhance the intuitiveness and adaptiveness of the MBUX voice assistant. Incorporating ChatGPT, renowned for its proficiency in natural language processing, aligns well with this objective.
Notwithstanding these advancements, some owners might have apprehensions about the safety and effectiveness of AI tools in their vehicles. To alleviate these concerns, Mercedes-Benz assures that data protection is of paramount importance. The company stated that ChatGPT will function within a controlled cloud as the automaker keeps a vigilant eye on potential risks and system improvement opportunities.
Markus Schäfer, Mercedes-Benz Group CTO, expressed that integrating ChatGPT in their controlled cloud environment symbolizes a significant step towards positioning their cars at the center of customers’ digital lives. The ultimate ambition is to redefine the customer’s relationship with their Mercedes.
Mercedes-Benz has a solid track record of integrating cutting-edge technology in its vehicles. Notably, the automaker collaborated with UK-based blockchain startup Circulor in 2020 to reduce CO2 emissions in its supply chain. The introduction of ChatGPT further underscores this commitment to technological innovation and user experience enhancement.
