A new MIT spinoff, Liquid AI, is set to disrupt the AI landscape by harnessing liquid neural networks. Co-founded by Daniela Rus, a renowned figure in the field of robotics, the startup emerged from stealth mode with an impressive $37.5 million in funding, a substantial amount for a two-stage seed round. This funding was secured from venture capitalists and prominent organizations, including OSS Capital, PagsGroup, Automattic (parent company of WordPress), Samsung Next, Bold Capital Partners, ISAI Cap Venture, and notable angel investors like Tom Preston Werner, Tobias Lütke, and Bob Young.

With a post-money valuation of $303 million, Liquid AI aims to leverage its expertise in liquid neural networks, a relatively new AI model, to create general-purpose AI systems. This novel AI architecture, developed by researchers including Ramin Hasani, Mathias Lechner, and Alexander Amini, offers several unique advantages.

Liquid neural networks, which trace their roots to 2018, are smaller and more efficient than traditional AI models. They require significantly less computational power to function effectively. For instance, a liquid neural network designed for autonomous driving can potentially run on a Raspberry Pi, highlighting their efficiency.

Additionally, liquid neural networks are highly interpretable, making them more transparent than their larger counterparts. This transparency is crucial for understanding the inner workings of AI systems.

What truly sets liquid neural networks apart is their adaptability. These networks adjust their parameters over time in response to changing circumstances, enabling them to perform effectively in dynamic environments. This feature allows liquid neural networks to excel in tasks such as autonomous navigation.

In tests, Liquid AI’s liquid neural network outperformed other algorithms in various prediction tasks, including atmospheric chemistry and car traffic. The network demonstrated exceptional capabilities in autonomous navigation, successfully guiding drones to targets in unfamiliar environments. It exhibited a remarkable ability to generalize to new scenarios without requiring fine-tuning, making it a powerful tool for applications like drone search and rescue, wildlife monitoring, and delivery services.

Liquid AI intends to commercialize this technology by building Liquid foundation models to rival leading generative AI models. Beyond model development, the startup plans to offer on-premises and private AI infrastructure for customers and provide a platform for building customized AI models. This platform aims to address accountability and safety concerns associated with large AI models, offering more capital-efficient, reliable, and explainable machine learning models.

With a growing team and an innovative approach to AI, Liquid AI is poised to reshape the AI landscape and usher in a new era of efficient, adaptable, and transparent AI systems.
